SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Highlighted by
Andrew Young's (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) 26 points, Missouri S&T Men's Basketball took down Illinois Springfield 85-78 on the road.
In a game of 10 ties and 17 lead changes, the Miners and Prairie Stars were tied 37-37 after the first half.
Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) started out his career-high night with a three-pointer. At a 10-10 tie, S&T went on a 5-0 run, but the Stars responded with their own 5-0 run.
Later, the Miners went on another 5-0 run highlighted by five points from
Cameron Stovall (St. Louis, MO/Vashon) to take a 30-25 lead. The Miners took an eight-point lead with 3:46 left but Illinois Springfield went on an 8-0 run to end the half.
The two teams were back-and-forth early in the second half until Stovall gave S&T a four-point advantage. The Stars answered one again as they took a 49-48 lead. With 8:12 left in the game,
Adam Rickman (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) put in a layup to make the score 62-56.
The Stars responded with an 8-0 run to take a 64-62 lead with 6:35 left. An S&T 9-0 run made the score 71-64 with 5:42 to go. Illinois Springfield made it a three-point game with 3:27 left but Young put in a bucket 18 seconds later. S&T put the game away as they won it 85-78.
Young put up a career-best 26 points with five rebounds and two blocks.
Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, IL/Huntley) recorded 17 points and six rebounds. Stovall put up 14 points and
Lovell Williams (Rogers, MN/Maple Grove) tallied 13 with three rebounds and five assists. Williams is just the fifth player in Missouri S&T history to join the 300-assist club after this game.
S&T shot 46.7% from the field and 7-for-22 from beyond the arc. They outrebounded the Stars 31-29. The Miners picked up 40 points in the paint with only six turnovers induced.
With the win, the Miners moved to 15-1 and 9-0 in the GLVC. They hold a two-game lead over second-place Lewis in the standings.
What's Next
Missouri S&T will end the week at McKendree on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Following that game, they will come back home to face Lewis on Jan. 30 and Indianapolis on Feb. 1.
