S&T Men's Soccer Blank Maryville, Improve to 5-1-1 and Second Place

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T Men's Soccer defeated Maryville on Friday afternoon 1-0 on the road.

In a rainy and windy day at Maryville, the Miners and Saints remained scoreless after the first half. The Miners pressured early, however, as Luis Bernis had a shot saved in the second minute and Mike Banasik (Loekkegade, Denmark/Hjoering Gymnasium) was also saved in the seventh minute. In total, S&T had five shots saved in the half, the other three from Caden Archer (St. Louis, MO/Vianney), Bernis and Brendan Owens (St. Louis, MO/Fort Zumwalt South). Cavitt Bruhn (Plano, TX/Plano) saved three Maryville shots in the first half.

Missouri S&T came out pressuring in the second half once again after Afxentis Andreou (Paphos, Cyprus/Lykeo Agios Charalambous) was saved in the 54th minute. Two minutes later, Banasik was set up after Joao Vieria got around three players who passed it to Mustafa Hasan (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) who then passed it to Luke Giesing (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) in the box. Banasik was in front of a defender who scored his first goal of the season off his left foot.

The Miners defended for the majority of the second half as they kept the Saints out of the back of the net. In total, Bruhn made five saves with no goals allowed as the Miners won 1-0.

Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) tallied three shots and two shots on goal in the game. Bernis and Banasik also recorded two shots on goal. In total, the Miners collected 16 shots and 10 shots on goal. The defense held the Saints to only five shots on goal.

Missouri S&T moved to 5-1-1 with their last loss on Sept. 13. They are undefeated through three matches in GLVC play with a 2-0-1 record. They are tied for second place in the GLVC with McKendree and Illinois Springfield. Indianapolis remains in first place with a 3-0 conference record.

This win over Maryville marks their first victory since 2016 when the Miners won 3-1 against the Saints.
