Miners to face UMSL, McKendree during weekend at home

4/3/2024 2:37:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's softball team will look to extend its four-game winning streak and improve its position in the Great Lakes Valley Conference when it plays a pair of home doubleheaders at the S&T Softball Field.

The Miners come into this weekend's play at 7-5 in the GLVC and have inched their way back towards the .500 mark overall as they will bring a 16-20 record into Saturday's noon doubleheader against Missouri-St. Louis.  The Miners will follow that up with another twinbill on Sunday against McKendree.

S&T swept its four games in the Kansas City area last weekend, recording 20 2/3 shutout innings at the outset and then putting together a rally in the seventh inning of Friday's nightcap at Rockhurst to complete the sweep.  The Miners got shutout pitching performances from Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) and Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) in a pair of 1-0 wins at William Jewell, then Wooldridge carried a shutout into the seventh in Friday's opener against Rockhurst and then got the win in game two in relief after delivering a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Rowland owns a 3.15 earned run average to go with her 6-6 record and has struck out 87 hitters on the season, while Wooldridge improved to 9-7 in the circle and leads the staff with 113 strikeouts in 97 innings of work; the strikeout average of eight per seven innings ranks third in the GLVC.

Wooldridge also ranks second among the Miners in hitting with a .370 batting average to Sydney Anderson's (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) .393 mark that currently ranks 10th in the conference.  Anderson also leads the Miners with 26 runs batted in and heads the conference with 16 doubles, a mark that ranks sixth in NCAA Division II while also driving in the run that put S&T in the lead in each of the first three games of the Miners' current winning streak.

Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) comes into the week batted .283 on the year and Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) – one of three Miners to homer at Rockhurst on Friday – is batting .271 on the season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Missouri-St. Louis brings a 17-19 overall record and 4-6 mark in the GLVC into Saturday's doubleheader.  The Tritons knocked off fifth-ranked Indianapolis to open their weekend last week, but dropped the second game of that twinbill and two games on Saturday to Lewis to drop below the .500 mark in the GLVC.

The Tritons are paced at the plate by Irene Travis with a .380 batting average and Courtney Settles with a .354 mark, while McKenzie Lamos has a team-leading six home runs and 23 runs batted in.  In the circle, Ashley Borowitz has nine wins and a 2.93 goals against average to go with 99 strikeouts in 105 innings, while Katie Schaake and Lexi Sherrick have four wins apiece.

McKendree comes into the weekend at 23-14 on the year and 6-4 in the GLVC as it had a similar run of weekend results as UMSL did, winning its first game of the weekend before dropping the next three.

Much of the offensive punch for the Bearcats this season has come from Lauren Harris, who leads the GLVC with a .530 average and is second in the conference with 12 home runs and 39 runs batted in.  Harris, who has also stolen a team-leading 15 bases, has been aided on the offensive side by Olivia Stansbury with a .327 average, six homers and 30 runs driven in.  Ellie Quaethem is 13-6 with a 1.73 earned run average and 130 strikeouts (third in the GLVC) and Paige McAllister has 10 wins and a 2.52 ERA.
