BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Missouri S&T's softball team got out to an early lead against Missouri Southern Friday evening, but the Lions scored seven unanswered runs and went on to defeat the Miners 7-3 at the Alvy Early Memorial Tournament.
S&T (2-3) got out in front right out of the gate as
Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) drew a leadoff walk and came all the way around to score on a double by
Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto). That would be all S&T would get in the first, but it plated two more runs an inning later to go up 3-0.
After
Chloe Saltijeral (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) drew a walk,
Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) moved her around to third on a double. With one out, Kiera Jones reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Saltijeral to score, then Grobe drove in her second run of the evening on a ground ball that scored Neal.
The Lions (7-1) got a run back in the second, then took the lead against S&T starter
Mayce Barber (Excelsior Springs, Mo./Excelsior Springs) with a three-run fourth inning. Southern scored its first run on an S&T error, then Kara Amos doubled with two outs to score the tying and go-ahead runs. The Lions would tack on three more runs in the fifth.
Southern outhit S&T 8-7 in the contest; Viox and Grobe had two hits apiece for the Miners, who will play Central Missouri and East Central on Saturday to wrap up their weekend of action.
