ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's offense shot 25.5% from the field in a tough loss at Maryville earlier today. Defensively,
Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) had two blocks as she adds to her all-time blocks for S&T.
1st Quarter:
The Miners fell behind early to Maryville, as the Saints hit a pair of jumpers and made a layup to take a 6-0 lead in the opening two minutes. The Miners found their first bucket of the game at 6:34 in the first, off a steal from
Chorus Davis (Kansas City, MO/Lincoln College Prep) that led to a layup for Roberts (assisted by
Franchesca Metz (Downers Grove, IL/Nazareth Academy)). The Saints would then pull ahead 11-2, but the Miners went on a five-point run to improve the score to 7-11 with 4:31 remaining in the first. The rest of the opening quarter was a struggle for the Miners, as they turned the ball over six times and found themselves in an early hole, down 7-20 to the Saints.
2nd Quarter:
The Miners turnover woes continued at the opening of the second quarter, committing four and going down 7-22 in the first three and a half minutes. S&T's offense produced well in the middle of the second, as they were able to get inside to the paint more while drawing fouls. The Miners put up 11 points in just under four and a half minutes to cut the deficit to ten at 18-28. The Saints hit a three before halftime and went into the locker room up 31-18 on the Miners.
3rd Quarter:
Buckets from Roberts, Davis and a three from
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) helped the Miners open the 3rd quarter with a 7-2 run and close the gap to just eight points. Maryville's Antoinette Mussorici led her team's response with eight of her team's ten points in the next two and a half minutes as the Saints pulled ahead 43-25. The Miners were able to slow the Saints down and even up the scoring but still found themselves down 32-52 entering the fourth.
4th Quarter:
The Saints started extending their lead at the beginning of the fourth, but a three from
Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) helped the Miners stop the home team from pulling away early. Offensive struggles continued for the Miners though, with Coach
Kira Carter putting in some of her depth players late as the Saints went on to beat the Miners 67-40.
Norah Gum (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) led the Miners offensively, providing 8 points off the bench. Kent's two three-pointers now ties her with Toni Knar for seventh on S&T's list for threes made in a single season.
The Miners head to Fayette, Iowa next to take on Upper Iowa for the first time this season.
