Football Heads to Indiana to Face #15 Indianapolis

11/7/2024 12:00:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  --  Coming off close loss to the McKendree Bearcats last week, Missouri S&T will now turn their eyes to Indianapolis where they will take on the Greyhounds who are ranked #15 in the last American Football Coaches Association poll.

Series History
The Miners have struggled in this series, only winning once in the eleven-game history between S&T and UIndy, with that win coming in Rolla in 2021. The last matchup between these two teams was on September 30th, 2023 in Rolla, in a matchup that saw the Greyhounds take a 26-13 victory.

About the Greyhounds
With an 8-1 record on the season, Indianapolis sits atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference, two games ahead of Upper Iowa. After opening their season with a trio of wins, including a 41-34 victory over Truman State, the Greyhounds lost against Saginaw Valley on homecoming weekend in Indianapolis.  The Greyhounds would struggle again the following week, nearly losing to William Jewell 23-20 in overtime. They have bounced back since then though, winning three of their last four by four or more possessions.

The Greyhounds offense has been a force to be reckoned with this year, averaging 38.6 points per game, the ninth most in the country. Quarterback Gavin Sukup has thrown for over 2,000 yards this season and is averaging 231.6 yards per game. He has a conference-high efficiency rating of 160.6, throwing 18 touchdowns and 4 interceptions with a 64.3 completion percentage.

UIndy's defense is best in the conference as well, allowing just 18.2 points per game to opponents. Their ability to stop the run has been their greatest strength on that side of the ball, ranking eighth in the nation with just 79 yards rushing yards allowed per game.

About the Miners
Missouri S&T dropped back to a sub-.500 record last week after their 27-20 loss to McKendree. It was a close game that saw two ties and four touchdowns scored in the fourth quarter. Despite the loss, David Harris (Maidson, TN/Goodpasture Christian) earned his first career special teams player of the week award for blocking a pair of field goals in the second half.

The Miners remain the #2 scoring offense in the conference behind Indianapolis, averaging 34.2 points per game to the Greyhounds' 38.6. Their defense has not seen the same level of success that they Greyhounds' has this season, giving up 31.0 points per game to opponents which is the third worst in the conference.

Tyler Gioia (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) has the third best quarterback efficiency rating in the conference at 138.9, averaging 204 yards per game. Gioia's top target this season has been CJ Wiggins (Yuma, AZ/Gila Ridge), who is now second in the conference for receiving yards per game at 74.8.

What's Next
