ROLLA, Mo. -- The Miners dropped today's match against the Rockhurst Hawks 5-2, ending their 2024 season with a 4-11-2 record and just missing the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Missouri S&T celebrated military appreciation day and senior day at the match, honoring seniors Kana Chung,
Emily Piel (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North),
Abi Trenary (Bixby, OK/Bixby),
Natalie Newman (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood),
Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman),
Allison Cole (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield),
Jillian Pelger (Tulsa, OK/Bishop Kelley), and
Rebecca Grady (Cypress, TX/Bridgeland) during the pregame ceremony.
The Miners struggled to maintain possession throughout the match against a Rockhurst team was 9-3-1 against GLVC opponents entering the match. RU's Anna Lantz got a lot of scoring looks during the match and helped the Hawks take an early lead with an assist on their first goal. The Miners answered right back though, scoring 11 seconds later after passes from
Greycen Erisman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) and
Brooke Bendoff (Kirkwood, MO/Kirkwood) put Hoenes in position to score.
The score would not remain at 1-1 for long, with Rockhurst's Jacie Tottleben scoring her second goal of the day after a defensive breakdown left her unmarked in the box. The Hawks heavily pressured the Miners defense for the next 14 minutes, getting 8 shots and
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) making 5 saves. S&T would move the ball better for the remainder half, even getting a few looks at goal and a shot by
Macy Wilderson (Kansas City, MO/St. Pius X). The Hawks would further their lead in the 41st minute when Barcom was unable to cover a save, allowing RU's Sarah Gilmore to tap the ball in.
With the score 3-1 coming out of halftime, the Miners made a switch in goal, bringing Newman in. RU's Lantz continued to apply pressured early in the second half, but it would be Lizzo Rosenthal who scored next for the Hawks, giving the visitors a 4-1 lead in the 56th minute. The Miners would answer quickly again after Hoenes made a move past a defender to cross the ball into
Haylee Prime (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy Orange) for the Miners' second score of the match.
The Miners possessed the ball better for the rest of the match but were unable to score again. Another defensive lapse in the 71st minute would give Tottleben her third goal to complete the hat trick, leading to the Hawks holding on to be S&T 5-2.
