Volleyball Upends #14 Missouri-St. Louis

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T Women's Volleyball picked up their biggest win of the 2024 season against #14 UMSL on Saturday.

In a five-set match, the Miners won the first set 25-23. The two teams traded points early on, but UMSL took a 6-4 lead. The Tritons took a 16-11 lead after they recorded seven points in nine tries. S&T then took a one-point lead thanks to a six-point run. UMSL responded but the Miners took a 23-21 lead with two consecutive points. An attack error gave Missouri S&T the 25-23 win.

The Tritons took set two in a dominating fashion 25-14. They went up early with 11 of the first 15 points. That lead held as the Miners could not complete a late comeback. A service ace from Rylee Edson ended the set to tie the match at 1-1.

S&T answered in the third set with a 25-21 victory. The Tritons led early in the set and took a bigger 11-4 lead after they scored five straight points. The Miners responded right back with an eight-point run to go up 12-11. Following a four-point UMSL run, S&T took an 18-17 lead, but UMSL put up two straight points to take a lead. To close out the set, the Miners went on two three-point runs to win 25-21. Madison Smith (Boonville, MO/Boonville) ended it with a kill.

At a 2-1 deficit, UMSL put together another dominant set as they won 25-17. Their big runs came in the middle of the set with 12 points in 14 tries to give them a 16-8 lead. S&T tried to stage a comeback as they went on a four-point run to decrease their deficit to four points. However, UMSL closed out the set with six points in eight attempts to win 25-17. Alayna Santel ended the set via kill.

In a sudden death fifth set, the Miners came out on top 15-11. After the Tritons took a 4-2 lead, the Miners recorded seven unanswered points to go up 9-4. Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) tallied two kills in that span. After the Tritons got back within two points, the Miners took a 12-8 lead. Both teams traded points the rest of the way as the Miners won 15-11. An attacking error ended the match as S&T took down #14 UMSL.

Alina Carrillo (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) collected another double-double for the Miners with 17 kills and 24 digs. She also collected three blocks. Isabelle Monaco (O'Fallon, MO/Living Word Christian) also had a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. Madison Offerman (Herscher, IL/Herscher) pushed across six kills and two blocks. Smith collected seven blocks and four kills. Mehaffy had 13 assists, nine digs, three kills, two aces and two blocks. Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) dished out 23 assists with six digs.

Missouri S&T recorded the win over #14 Missouri-St. Louis for their fourth win in a row. With the victory, the Miners have moved themselves into eighth place in the GLVC with three weeks to go until the tournament.

What's Next

The Miners will be back in action next weekend to take on Flagler and Lewis on Nov. 1 and Indianapolis on Nov. 2. They will be back at home on Nov. 9 to face Maryville.
