Miners make early goal hold up to blank Bearcats

ROLLA, Mo.. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team got a goal in the seventh minute of play Friday night and made that goal hold up as the Miners recorded a 1-0 win over Southwest Baptist in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Earning a corner kick opportunity early in the contest, Tony Petruso's (O'Fallon, MO/St. Dominic) serve went first off of Nathan Weyrauch (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) in front of the net, then to Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) and finally to Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead), who hit a shot through a small maze of defenders to give the Miners the advantage.

From there, S&T (2-4-1, 1-2 GLVC) was able to hold off every SBU scoring opportunity, as Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) turned away three of the four Bearcat shots on goal; the fourth was cleared off the end line by the Miner defense.  S&T had a 15-11 advantage in shots over the Bearcats (1-4-1, 0-3 GLVC) and created eight corner kick chances in the game.

SBU's best chance to tie the contest came in the 54th minute, when a shot by Luthando Ntshangase was stopped in front of the net by a Miner defender and cleared without any further damage.

The Miners will host Drury (0-4-3, 0-2-1 GLVC), who lost 2-1 Friday at 12th-ranked Maryville, on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
