ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team dominated the possession time and held a huge advantage in shots and used that to capture its first victory of the season Sunday in a 2-0 victory over Union at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
S&T had a 23-4 advantage in shots and also created 10 corner kicks as it created numerous scoring chances throughout the afternoon. However, it wasn't until midway through the second half before it finally broke through to get the lead on the scoreboard.
The Miners (1-2-1) had all 14 shots in the first half and had six of them on net, but Union goalkeeper Tommy Scahill stopped all six. But in the 69
th minute, the Miners finally got a ball past Scahill to move on top as
Tony Petruso (O'Fallon, MO/St. Dominic) took the ball down the sideline and sent a pass towards the front of the net.
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) tapped it along to Mike Banazik and he buried the shot in the back of the net for the lead.
S&T added onto its lead seven minutes later as Semiltsch sent a ball to the top of the box and
Derek Schlenker (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) put it into the top corner of the goal.
The Miners defense was solid all afternoon as Union (2-1-1) had only the four shots in the game, all coming in the second half. S&T goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) finished with two saves, but the S&T defensive unit prevented a number of scoring chances by the Bulldogs.
Missouri S&T will kick off its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Friday when it plays at Quincy at 7:30 p.m.
