ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T had a record 13 teams named among 161 squads across the Great Lakes Valley Conference as recipients of the league's Team Academic Awards for the recently completed 2022-23 season.
The S&T program was among 11 schools in the conference that had a higher number of teams receive the honor this season, as nine Miner teams were named a year ago. The 13 teams named this season exceeded the previous high of 11 named after both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns.
To earn the award, teams had to finish the academic year with a grade point average of 3.30 or better. The list of teams is headed by the women's cross country team with a 3.85 mark that ranked as the fourth-best among all of the 161 teams named and was named for the 14
th consecutive year.
S&T's women's track & field teams finished with a 3.71 grade point average for the year, while the women's basketball team posted a GPA of 3.67 and the women's volleyball team finished with a GPA of 3.66; the volleyball team has now earned the honor in all 14 seasons of its existence. The highest-ranked men's team was the golf squad that finished with a grade point average of 3.63.
The other squads to earn the award were the men's teams in cross country, baseball, soccer, track & field, basketball and swimming, while the women's soccer and softball teams were also honored. S&T's soccer and volleyball teams were among the four sports in which all 13 schools had their respective teams make the list.
Although the football team was not among the 13 S&T teams selected, it did finish the academic year with a grade point average of 3.16 as a group as every Miner athletic team recorded a grade point average of at least 3.16 for the past year. Missouri S&T's men's volleyball team, which was in its first season of play during the 2022-23 academic year, had a 3.38 team average for the year in a sport that the GLVC does not currently sponsor a championship in.
The collective grade point average of Missouri S&T's athletic teams during the past year was 3.57.
A total of 109 women's teams and 52 men's programs made up the 161 teams to earn the team academic honor. Lewis and Maryville shared the lead in the GLVC with 16 sports apiece that earned the team award.
