Miners blanked twice by Saints

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The road portion of the Missouri S&T softball schedule closed out on a down note Sunday afternoon as the Miners were shut out in both ends of their doubleheader at Maryville University.

The Saints handed the Miners a 12-0 loss in game one, then completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory in game two that dropped S&T to 17-25 overall and 9-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Game 1 – Maryville 12, Miners 0

The Miners had a great scoring opportunity right out of the gate as they loaded the bases in the first inning when Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) led off with a single, Hannah Antzoulatos (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) was hit by a pitch and Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) drew a walk.  However, the Miners could not cash in the chance, with Viox being thrown out at the plate on a force out along the way.

Maryville then responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first, scoring the first on a wild pitch and the other on an RBI double by Emerson Heron, then scored another run in the third on a hit by Erin Sammermann.  After the Miners missed on another scoring chance in the third when they had a runner at second with two outs, the Saints (27-17, 15-7 GLVC) broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the third and tacked on four more in the fourth.

The Saints outhit S&T 9-5 in the opener, with Antzoulatos getting two of the Miner hits and reaching base three times.   Starting pitcher Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) was charged with the loss.

Game 2 – Maryville 8, Miners 0

The nightcap started in a similar manner, with the Miners getting two runners on base in the top half of the inning but coming away scoreless before the Saints put six runs on the scoreboard in their half of the inning.  Maryville's first four runners reached base, with the first two runs scoring on an error and a passed ball as it sent 10 hitters to the plate in the first.

Maryville scored single runs in the second and fourth, both crossing the plate on RBI singles by Heron as she had two of the nine Saint hits in game two.

Antzoulatos had two hits in the nightcap as well as the Miners were outhit 9-5.  Charyle Rowland took the loss in the circle for S&T.

The Miners will play their final six games at home, beginning with a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday against Missouri Western at 1 p.m. at the S&T Softball Field.
