LIBERTY, Mo. – For the second time in less than a week, Missouri S&T suffered a doubleheader loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference play and answered back the next afternoon with a sweep, as the Miners took both ends of their twinbill Sunday at William Jewell by scores of 7-4 and 4-1.
The sweep of the Cardinals moved the Miners to 12-14 on the season and evened their conference record at 4-4.
Game 1 – Missouri S&T 7, William Jewell 4
The opener was a back-and-forth affair, with the Miners getting the last blow in as they scored three times in the top of the seventh to break a four-all tie.
S&T loaded the bases to open the seventh inning on an infield hit by
Alyssa Haile (St. Peters, MO/Francis Howell Central), a bunt single by
Baylee Jobson (Marceline, Mo./Marceline RV) and an opposite field single by
Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville). With
Chloe Saltijeral (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) at the plate, William Jewell pitcher Sammie Welt threw a wild pitch to bring in the go-ahead run, then Saltijeral followed with a double into the gap in left center to score Jobson and Viox.
The Miners weren't able to add any additional runs in the frame, but
Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) pitched around a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh to lock up the win.
S&T took the initial lead in the game in the second on a two-run double by
Hannah Antzoulatos (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy), but the Cardinals (4-20, 0-8 GLVC) answered back in the bottom of the frame with a three-run homer off the bat of Ella Hoffman to go in front.
The Miners regained the lead in the fifth, first tying the score on an RBI single by Haile, then Viox put S&T in front with a one-out single that drove in
Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury). The Cardinals knotted the score in the sixth when Hoffman drew a walk with the bases loaded to force in the tying run, but Rowland got the next two hitters to keep the game tied to set up the Miners' winning rally in the seventh.
S&T outhit William Jewell 15-4 in the game, with Jobson getting three of the hits and Wooldridge, Haile, Viox and Antzoulatos all having two apiece. Rowland picked up the win in relief, while starter
Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) struck out seven hitters in 5 1/3 innings.
Game 2 – Missouri S&T 4, William Jewell 1
S&T jumped on top in the second inning of the nightcap as Jobson led the inning off with a double into the gap, moved to third on a groundout and came across the plate on an opposite field single by Antzoulatos. The Miners held onto that one-run advantage until the fifth after dodging a pair of scoring opportunities by the Cardinals along the way.
Jewell got two runners on base in the second and got a two-out triple by Sabrina Olmo in the third, but left those runners stranded and proceeded to break the game open with three runs in the fifth.
That inning started with a walk to Viox, who was then doubled in by Antzoulatos to make it 2-0. Antzoulatos ended up at third after the throw, but she scored moments later when Saltijeral reached on an error.
Salijeral would score the third run of the inning following a hit by
Emma Vaughn (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum).
Rowland, who got the game two start after finishing and winning game one, kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard until the sixth when Amanda Chung singled with two outs to bring home the only Jewell run. After allowing that hit, Rowland got a lineout to end the frame and retired the Cardinals in order in the seventh, recording her eighth strikeout along the way.
S&T outhit the Cardinals 9-4 in the nightcap, with Vaughn getting three of the Miner hits.
Missouri S&T will play a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday against Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo., with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
