S&T's Swadley takes sixth for third All-America honor in shot put

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Missouri S&T's Nathan Swadley (Willard, MO/Willard) earned the third All-America award of his career Saturday as he finished sixth in the shot put competition at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Swadley earned a spot among the top eight with his throw in the second round, then posted his best mark of 58-11.5 in round four – his seasonal best – to earn his spot on the podium.

Swadley was third after the opening round of throws as he posted a mark of 57-2.25, but threw a season-best 58-10 in round two to take the lead in the first of the two flights.  That mark was good enough to maintain the lead at the conclusion of the first flight to guarantee Swadley a spot in the finals.

Following the second flight, Swadley dropped to fifth place in the standings and stayed there after recording his best throw in round four.  He was passed in the fifth round by West Chester's Ralph Casper, but was able to retain his sixth place position in the standings.

Four of Swadley's six marks exceeded 58 feet and three were better than his seasonal best coming into the national meet.

The shot put was won by Grand Valley State's Myles Kerner with a mark of 64-8; Kerner took the lead on his first throw of the day and he had his eventual top mark in round three.

Along with the fourth place finish recorded Friday by Jacob Luebbert (Warsaw, MO/Warsaw) in the weight throw, this weekend's performances marked the first time since 2010 that the Miners had multiple individuals earn All-America honors during the indoor campaign.  S&T finished in a tie for 26th place in the team scoring with the eight points accumulated by the two.
