ROLLA, Mo. - The Missouri S&T men's volleyball team returned to the hardwood less than 24 hours after a loss on Thursday and bounced back with a four-set win over Kansas Wesleyan at Gibson Arena for its fifth win in six games on its home floor.
S&T won the first set 25-19 and after dropping the second 25-23, won the final two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-17 to improve to 8-9 in its inaugural season of play.Â
Â
The Miners had an early 6-2 spurt that started with a
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) kill and was capped off by an assisted block by
Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) and
Caleb Rohlwing (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) that gave S&T an early 9-4 lead. S&T got three consecutive kills from Meyer later in the set to increase the lead to 15-7.
Â
KWU rebounded as it erupted for an 11-4 run -- six of those points coming from Miner errors -- to cut the lead to 19-18 before S&T used a 5-0 run to reach set point and eventually won it on a Meyer kill.  Â
Â
In set two, each team went point-for-point to a 9-9 tie before KWU went on a 7-2 run to take a 16-11 lead. The Miners clawed back into the set and got to within a point several times but up 24-23, Kahlib Lawrence won the set for KWU with a kill.Â
Â
In the third set, S&T scored the first three points that included back-to-back service aces by Rohlwing and led by much of the set until the Coyotes scored three straight points to take a 17-16 lead. However, Rohlwing started a 4-1 run on a kill that tied the set at 17 and Meyer capped it off with another kill to give the Miners a 20-18 lead.
Â
Each team continued to go point-for-point to 23-22, then S&T scored the final two points on a Sallade kill and an attack error by Viet Nguyen to claim the set.
Â
In the final set, S&T had matters in its hands through, getting out to a 5-1 lead and then increasing its lead to 9-3 on another kill by Meyer. The Miners kept their lead throughout the fourth set and eventually scored three of the final four points to close out the match.
Â
The Miners were led in kills by Meyer with 20, while Sallade added 12 and Orr recorded 42 assists. Defensively, Rohlwing, Sallade and
Grogan Kraus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) each recorded four blocks.
Â
The Coyotes (9-16) were led in kills by Nguyen with 10 and Lawrence added nine.Â
Â
The Miners continue their stretch of home games as they host Missouri Baptist Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Gibson Arena.Â
