Miners to face UIndy in first round of GLVC Tournament

3/1/2023 9:05:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. - The S&T women's basketball team will make an appearance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal round for the first time since the 2012-13 season Friday night when it takes on Indianapolis at Hyland Arena on the campus of Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.

Friday's contest will be the trilogy between the teams this season as they have faced off twice with the visiting team winning on both occasions. On Jan. 12, S&T went into Indianapolis and defeated the Greyhounds 72-67 behind 23 points and 13 rebounds from Alex Kerr (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy). S&T had three other players finish in double figures as Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) contributed 13 points, while Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) and Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) each added 10 points. For UIndy, Sadie Hill led the Greyhounds with 15 points and Jodi Mullins added 14.

Last Saturday, UIndy came into Gibson Arena and defeated the Miners 73-57 to even the season series. In that contest, Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) led S&T with 20 points, while Davis contributed 14 and Kerr added 13. UIndy was led in scoring by Hill with 19 points, while Lauren With added 15 and Ilani Williams-Harris tacked on 14.

Kerr leads S&T in scoring and rebounding with averages of 15.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.  Her scoring average ranks seventh in the conference while her rebounding mark stands alone atop in the GLVC. During the regular season, Kerr also finished with 32 blocks which ranked third in GLVC play. Rodriguez is the second leading scorer for S&T as she is averaging 14.5 points per game, ranking 15th among all GLVC players.

The Greyhounds are led in scoring and rebounding by Hill as she is averaging 14.8 points and 7.2 rebounds, while also leading the team with 35 steals and 21 blocks. Elana Wells and With – who is shooting nearly 48 percent from the field -- are both averaging at least nine points per game.

S&T is making its 11th appearance in the GLVC Tournament, but last played in a quarterfinal game in 2013 when it lost to Lewis. The Miners' last conference tournament win came during that season when it knocked off Missouri-St. Louis in an opening round game.

The winner will face the winner of Thursday's Drury-Quincy matchup Saturday at 6 p.m. The championship game is slated for Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
