Miners unable to dig out of hole in loss to Saints

ROLLA, Mo. – After a fast start to the contest, Missouri S&T's women's basketball team fell into a rut just as Maryville got hot from the field, putting it into a deficit it couldn't overcome as it fell 79-60 to the Saints Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup at Gibson Arena.

The Miners opened the game by scoring the first seven points – on baskets by Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge), Chorus Davis (Kansas City, MO/Lincoln College Prep) and a three-point basket by Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) – and held Maryville off the scoreboard for the first four and one-half minutes of the contest.  But after the Saints (3-7, 1-4 GLVC) got on the board on a basket by Gracie Stugart at the 5:32 mark of the first quarter, it was all Maryville for the remainder of the first half.

Stugart's basket started a 13-0 run to put the Saints into the lead as they finished the opening period with a 15-9 lead, then went 12-of-15 from the field in the second quarter as they outscored S&T – who made just four of its 12 shot attempts in the period – 29-9 to take a 44-18 lead to halftime.

S&T (1-9, 0-5 GLVC) outscored Maryville in the second half 42-35 as it made 42.5 percent of its shots after the break and thanks to a 10-2 run midway through the fourth quarter, got the lead down to 11 at 68-57 following a lay-up by Bonnie Lew Ludlow (Indianapolis, IN/Covenant Christian).  However, Maryville answered by scoring eight of the next 10 points to extend the lead back to 17 with under two minutes remaining.

Kent led the Miners with 12 points – scoring all of them on three-point baskets, while Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) posted her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.  Puett and Franchesca Metz (Downers Grove, IL/Nazareth Academy) each finished with nine points.

Maryville was paced by Carsyn Fearday with 20 points and Stugart with 17.

The Miners will play their next two games in Puerto Rico next weekend, beginning with a contest next Saturday against Puerto Rico-Bayamon at 12 p.m. Central time.
