ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's basketball team is heading to the Caribbean for its final games prior to the holidays, as it will play twice in Puerto Rico this weekend seeking to get back on the winning track.
The Miners will take on two Puerto Rican teams on the trip – both of which are affiliated with NCAA Division II – beginning with a Saturday afternoon matchup against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at noon Central time. S&T will close out its first semester schedule the following day with an 11 a.m. contest against Puerto Rico-Bayamon.
S&T dropped both of its games a week ago, losing a non-conference game in overtime to Health Sciences & Pharmacy and a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup to Maryville and will bring a record of 1-9 into the games this weekend.
Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) scored a career-high 28 points in the UHSP game and continues to lead the Miners in several statistical categories, including scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. She comes into Saturday's contest averaging 17.7 points and 8.9 rebounds, while shooting 55.8 percent from the field and has 12 blocked shots.
She is ranked third in rebounding, fourth in field goal percentage and blocked shots and following play on Saturday. She is one of only players in the GLVC who ranks among the top five in both scoring and rebounding
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) is also averaging in double figures with an average of 10.4 points per game and
Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) is among the GLVC leaders in steals with 17 and assists with 30. Kent also ranks seventh in the GLVC in three-pointers made with 21 after making eight in the two games last week to go along with nine assists.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS:
Puerto Rico-Mayaguez has played five games against teams from the United States thus far and has lost all five, not scoring more than 55 points in any of those games. The Janes lost a three-point decision to Saint Michael's in November, but the other four setbacks -- three to Division I teams -- were all by 31 or more points. Paola Sierra Lopez is the top scorer for Mayaguez with an average of 16 points per game, while Gabrieia Ortega is scoring 9.4 per contest.
Puerto Rico-Bayamon played two games against Division II teams last month, losing to nationally-ranked Union and to Saint Michael's; the Cowgirls will face McKendree prior to taking on the Miners Saturday. Abeliz Rodriguez is the only player to average in double figures in those two games as she scored 10.5 points per game, while Illadian Vazquez averaged eight points in those games. Siuly Burgos averaged 6.5 rebounds and shot 55.6 percent in those contests.
