ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After leading for much of the afternoon, Missouri S&T fell short in its bid to upset the top-seeded team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon as 25
th-ranked Maryville tied the game in the 80
th minute and scored twice in the first overtime period to win Sunday's quarterfinal matchup 3-1.
Ashlyne Hunt got the go-ahead goal for Maryville (13-2-3, 10-1-2 GLVC) in the 92
nd minute, getting a through ball from Lexi Gentry and then eluding diving S&T goalkeeper
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) to push a shot into the net to give the Saints their first lead of the afternoon.
The Miners (6-8-3, 5-7-1 GLVC), who lost 4-0 to the Saints two weeks ago in Rolla, got the first goal of the game in the 19
th minute when
Amelia Mundo (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) got the ball free from a defender and sent a pass wide to
Jenna Marti (Sammamish, WA/Eastside Catholic), who one-timed a shot from the top of the box past Saint goalkeeper Gigi Yurevich.
Marti's goal snapped a string of 457 consecutive shutout minutes by the Saints.
Barcom made a good save on a head ball effort by Gina Catanzaro in the 34
th minute and another on a long drive by Lotte Brands in the 58
th minute.
However, the Saints tied the game in the 80
th minute when Barcom made an initial save on a shot by Gentry, only to have Halle Ezell get to the rebound and put it in the net. Barcom stopped a potential game-winning goal in the 89
th minute when she saved a head ball shot in from by Allison Estanich.
After the overtime tally by Hunt, Sara Lawler converted a penalty kick in the 95
th minute to extend the lead to 3-1.
Maryville had a 32-3 advantage in shots and 11-1 in shots on net – the Miners scored on their lone shot on goal – with Barcom finishing with eight saves for S&T.
