Box Score WILLIAMSVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T's women's volleyball team captured the first set Saturday from second-ranked Missouri-St. Louis, but the Tritons held off S&T in the second set and took the next two to capture the semifinal match in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
The loss, which snapped the Miners' winning streak at seven games, puts the season on hold until the NCAA announces its regional pairings on Monday at 6:30 p.m. S&T was ranked ninth in this week's Midwest Regional rankings, but picked up a win Friday over sixth-ranked Rockhurst before Saturday's setback to the top-ranked team in the region.
S&T fell behind early in the opening set and after the first point of the match, did not hold a lead until scoring three straight points midway through the set to go up 18-17.
Alina Carrillo's (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) service ace tied it at 17, then she recorded another one after an UMSL timeout to put the Miners in the lead.
After the Tritons (30-0) regained the lead, the Miners made a 4-0 run to get the lead for good in the set.
Jordan Burton's (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) kill put the Miners up 21-20, then S&T closed out the set by scoring the final four points which was capped on a combined block by Burton and
Hannah Feltz (Wildwood, MO/Eureka).
The Miners held UMSL to a .130 attack percentage in the set while hitting .167 themselves.
S&T had the lead during the first part of set two, but the Tritons grabbed the lead at 9-8 and eventually pushed its advantage to six points at 19-13. The Miners began to claw back into the set, scoring three straight to cut the lead in half and then getting to within a point at 21-20 on a kill by Feltz.
After a back-to-back kills by
Shelby Ply (Rolla, MO/Rolla) on UMSL's set point drew the Miners back to one again, the Tritons got the next point on a kill by Lexie Rang.
UMSL dominated the final two sets, hitting .433 to the Miners .032 as it never trailed in the third set, then held the lead through nearly the entire fourth set as well as it won them by counts of 25-14 and 25-15. After posting the .433 hitting mark in the third set, the Tritons hit .345 in the final one.
Ply finished with a team-high 12 kills for S&T and had a .423 attack percentage in the match, while Burton had 11 kills. The Miners had six blocks in the match – three coming from Feltz -- while
Mia Alessio (Channahon, IL/Minooka) finished with 21 digs and
Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) had 22 assists.
