ROLLA, Mo. – After falling behind in the early stages of the second half,
Mike Banasik (Loekkegade, Denmark/Hjoering Gymnasium) scored twice in a span of just over two minutes to rally Missouri S&T's men's soccer team to a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory Friday evening over Missouri-St. Louis at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Banazik, the Miners' leading scorer for the season, tied the score when he took a long pass from Robert Sullentrop and beat UMSL goalkeeper Austin Reis in the 74
th minute. Just over two minutes later, Banasik took a cross from
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) and put the shot into the back of the net to give S&T the lead.
Following a scoreless first half that saw the teams combine for only three shots, the Tritons (2-4-2, 1-4-1 GLVC) took the lead when Luca Saewe scored out of a crowd in front of the Miner net in the 56
th minute.
The Miners (3-6-2, 2-4-1 GLVC) ended the contest with a 12-6 advantage in shots and had five shots on goal to UMSL's one. S&T's defense and goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) was able to keep the Tritons at bay after getting the lead, as UMSL's only shot after the Miners grabbed the lead was blocked.
Missouri S&T will host McKendree Sunday in a 2:30 p.m. match at the S&T Soccer Field.
