ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team enters the final weekend of regular season play with an opportunity to earn a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and the Miners will look to clinch that berth when they close out their conference slate at home this weekend.
The Miners, 5-6-3 overall and 4-6-1 in the GLVC, will host conference newcomer Upper Iowa Friday at 5 p.m., where a win and other favorable results around the league could lock up the playoff berth. S&T will then close its regular season schedule Sunday with a visit from Truman State at noon on Senior Day.
S&T dropped a 4-0 decision Sunday to Maryville, but remained in the eighth spot in the conference standings with 13 points; it is currently one point ahead of Indianapolis, three ahead of Quincy and four in front of Truman, who has a potential make-up game on top of its two games this weekend.
Coming into Friday's match, the Miners are led in scoring by
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) with four goals and three assists for 11 points, while
Amelia Mundo (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) also has four goals and has added two assists for 10 points.
Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman) and
Olivia Olson (Maryville, IL/Edwardsville) have scored two goals apiece as well.
Goalkeeper
Anastasia Barcom (St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) has a 1.20 goals against average with 42 saves in 900 minutes of play this season.
Missouri S&T's seniors will also be honored prior to the start of Sunday's match.
ABOUT UPPER IOWA: The Peacocks come into Friday's match with records of 2-11-2 and 1-8-2 in the GLVC and have dropped their last five decisions since beating William Jewell on Oct. 6. Three players have scored multiple goals for UIU, led by Rachyl Benevides with three goals and two assists for eight points, while Leah Buerck and Giovanna Alexa Garcia have scored twice apiece. Isabelle Wagner has seen most of the work in goal and has a 2.66 goals against average in 980 minutes.
ABOUT TRUMAN STATE: The Bulldogs enter the final weekend of play at 3-7-5 overall and 2-5-3 in the GLVC; Truman will play at GLVC co-leader Maryville on Friday and has a pending make-up contest with Missouri-St. Louis if the game has any bearing on the playoff race after play concludes this weekend. Truman comes into the weekend winless in its last seven outings, but did play to a scoreless tie with Indianapolis on Sunday.
Emma Thompson leads Truman with three goals and three assists for nine points, while Olivia Morris and Lia Quintero have two goals apiece. Tatumn Damron has played every minute in goal this season and has a 1.00 goals against average with six shutouts.
