S&T wins eight events in capturing double dual meet to open season

LIBERTY, Mo. -- Missouri S&T's swimming team opened its 2023-24 season Friday in impressive fashion, winning eight of the 11 events to take both ends of a double dual meet with host William Jewell and Maryville.

The Miners beat William Jewell by a count of 120-85 and Maryville 174-21 as they recorded 11 finishes among the top three in events on Friday.

S&T got a pair of wins from Connor Bichsel (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) as he recorded the fastest times in the 200-meter individual medley with a mark of 2:08 flat and in the 200-meter butterfly with his time of 2:09.86.  The Miners also picked up wins from Adam Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe) in the 100-meter freestyle in 52.53 seconds, Kevin Williams (Houston, TX/Westside) in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:14.03 and Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) in the 200-meter breaststroke with his time of 2:24.84.

The Miners grabbed the top two spots in the 200-breaststroke as Jordan Christensen (Coralville, IA/Iowa West) finished second in 2:27.19, as well as in the 50-meter freestyle, led by Oscar Iden's (Oslo, Norway/Oslo Private Gymnasium) winning time of 23.90 seconds.  Clancy finished right behind him in 24.01 and Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) was fourth in 24.72, then Walters later led a contingent of three Miners at the top of the chart in the 200-meter backstroke when he won in 2:09.53 and was followed by Cameron McCrary (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) in second at 2:10.78 and Oskar Fridsell (Solna, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium) in third at 2:11.75.

S&T's 200-yard medley relay team of Clancy, Jordan Christensen (Coralville, IA/Iowa West), Iden and Wiedemeier won the race with a time of 1:42.75, while the Miners' second group of Fridsell, Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy), Greg Dreisewerd (Ellisville, MO/MICDS) and JP McCann (Houston, TX/Westside) took third in 1:49.62 and third group consisting of McCrary, Jake Hale, Bichsel and Tristan Dawson (Brainerd, MN/Brainerd) came in fourth place in a time of 1:50.37.

Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden) placed second in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:54.03 as did Kevin Williams (Houston, TX/Westside) in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:58.90.  S&T also had a second place showing from its 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Eli Wetzel (Springdale, AR/Don Tyson School of Innovation), Williams, Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) and Walters as they finished in 1:37.89.

Dreisewerd got a third place time in the 200-butterfly of 2:14.25, while Lane Werth (Wichita, KS/Wichita North) finished fourth in the 800-meters in 9:27.01 along with Wiedemeier in the 200-freestyle in 1:59.33, Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) in the 200-IM in 2:12.65 and Melinder in the 400-freestyle in 4:21.28.  Mercer was fourth in the 200-breaststroke in 2:30.11 and also finished fifth in the 200-IM in 2:12.75, while Iden had a fifth place showing in the 100-freestyle in 53.29 seconds.

The Miners' next meet will take place Nov. 3-4 at the Drury Invitational in Springfield, Mo.
