LIBERTY, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team held a two-goal lead Sunday afternoon against William Jewell, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie after the Cardinals evened the match on a penalty kick with under two minutes remaining in the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.
S&T goalkeeper
Cavitt Bruhn (Plano, TX/Plano) – who was making his first career start Sunday and had stopped a previous penalty kick attempt by the Cardinals that would have tied the score in the 64
th minute – collided with a William Jewell player going after a loose ball in the box and was given a red card on the play. Jewell's Sam Wambold converted the chance with a minute and a half left on the clock to knot the contest.
Jewell also got a late corner kick chance to possibly win the game in the final moments, but the S&T defense was able to get the ball cleared out just before time expired.
S&T (2-6-2, 1-4-1 GLVC) got the first goal of the game on a penalty kick, which was awarded after Mike Banazik was taken down in front of the Cardinal goal.
Sam Bresette (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) made the attempt in the 19
th minute to put S&T on top.
The game remained that way until the 52
nd minute, as
Robert Suellentrop's (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit) throw-in went off of
Jacob Lee (Atlanta, GA/Dunwoody) and by Jewell goalkeeper Olav van Santen.
William Jewell (0-8-1, 0-5-1 GLVC) cut the margin in half in the 61
st minute when Cole Bulgren beat Bruhn to his right, then a foul in the box about three minutes later led to the first penalty kick chance, which Bruhn dove to his left to stop the try by Walker Bond.
The Miners had a chance to add onto their lead when they were able to get the ball into the box a couple of times and had one shot stopped by van Santen and the other cleared by the Cardinal defense.
William Jewell outshot the Miners 14-10 in the contest, but the Miners had eight shots on net to Jewell's five. Bruhn made three saves in his 88 minutes of action on Sunday.
Missouri S&T will host Missouri-St. Louis Friday at 7:30 p.m. to open a two-game home weekend.
