QUINCY, Ill. - The Missouri S&T women's basketball team continued Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 83-63 defeat at the hands of Quincy Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Arena.
The Miners (10-9, 6-5 GLVC) trailed by seven after the first period and 11 at the half, before ultimately getting outscored 39-30 in the second half.
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) began the scoring on a three-point basket to give S&T an early lead, but the Hawks (9-10, 5-6 GLVC) responded with a 5-0 run on back-to-back baskets by Sarah Nelson with a three-point basket by Emma Knipe before
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) scored on a layup to knot the game at 5-5. On the next Quincy possession, Nelson started another 5-0 run on a layup that put the Hawks into the lead for good.
At the 3:59 mark,
Anna Finley (Owensville, MO/Owensville) cut the deficit to one at 14-13 after a layup before the Hawks scored six straight points on back-to-back three-point baskets by Rylee Denbrow and Gabrielle Burns to increase their lead to seven and took a 22-15 advantage into the second quarter.
The Hawks continued their hot shooting by scoring seven consecutive points to begin the quarter where it was eventually snapped on a Keys three-point basket to cut the deficit to 10. The Quincy lead remained in double figures for a better part of the last few minutes of the half before the Hawks took a 44-33 lead to the break.
At the start of the second half, S&T scored seven of the first nine points, beginning with a
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) three-pointer and layups by Davis and
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) to cut the deficit to six. That, however, would be closest S&T would get as Quincy got its lead back into double digits a short time later and eventually had its lead to 20 by the time the third quarter ended.
S&T made a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter, getting to within 12 following a
Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) layup, but Quincy regained control of matters as it outscored S&T 10-2 run to close the game.
The Miners were led in scoring by Kerr, Davis and Keys with 11 points apiece. Finley and
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) added eight points and Finley also had three steals. Kerr and Davis both hauled in a team-high eight rebounds each as S&T outscored the Hawks in the paint 30-22.
The Hawks had five players finish in double figures paced by Beth Matas Martin with 20 points as she also dished out a team-high nine assists. Emma Knipe and Grace Flanagan added 12 points each and Rylee Denbow contributed 11. The Hawks drained 13 three-point baskets in the contest.
S&T will continue GLVC play Thursday as it visits Rockhurst at 5:30 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo at Mason-Halpin Field House.
