Early goal gives Miners first shutout, GLVC win of year

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team picked up its first shutout of the 2022 season as well as it first win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday night as the Miners made a Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) first half goal hold up in 1-0 victory over Southwest Baptist at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Sanchez scored off a nifty sequence of passes from Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) and Mustafa Hasan (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) in the 16th minute of play, as his shot cleared the goal line after it hit off the crossbar.

From there, the Miners (2-4-3, 1-2-3 GLVC) put the game in the hands of their defense and goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central), who turned away the only SBU (0-8-1, 0-5 GLVC) shot that reached him in the game, which came in the 66th minute off the foot of Elias El Bouali.

The Miners outshot the Bearcats 12-7 overall in the game as they recorded their first shutout since beating Illinois Springfield 2-0 in their next-to-last game of last season.  The win also snapped S&T's seven-game winless streak.

Missouri S&T will be back on the pitch Sunday when it hosts Drury in a 2:30 p.m. game at the S&T Soccer Field.
