Miners beat the clock, earn tie at Jewell on Bernis' goal

LIBERTY, Mo. – The Miners needed a last-minute miracle Sunday afternoon to salvage a tie at William Jewell – and got it when Luiz Bernis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Santo Antonio) headed in the game-tying goal with just 11 seconds remaining as the Miners got a 2-2 draw with the Cardinals in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

The Cardinals had scored twice in the second half to take the lead and were trying to hold on the final minute when the Miners got a throw-in opportunity on Jewell's end of the field.  Caleb Archer's throw-in went into a crowd in front of the net and Bernis got his head on it and put it into the back of the net to even things up.

The tie was the third for S&T in GLVC play as it goes to 1-4-3 overall and 0-2-3 in the GLVC.  William Jewell went to 2-1-2 both overall and in GLVC play.

Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) gave the Miners the lead in the 17th minute of action when a ball was played into the box by Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead), then was slightly redirected by Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) to the front of the crease, at which point Jorgensen beat Jewell goalkeeper Jose Arellano to the ball and pushed it by him for the first tally of the contest.

S&T took that lead into the second half but the Cardinals, who did not have a shot on net in the first half, got a goal out of a quick restart as Cole Bulgren sent a pass ahead to Carson Lee on a breakaway that Lee scored on to knot the contest.

The Miners had a good opportunity to regain the lead as Sigurd Semlitsch's (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) head ball was turned away by Arellano, then the Cardinals took the lead a couple of minutes later when Sam Wambold split a pair of S&T defenders and cut loose a shot from about 30 yards away that got past S&T goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central).

S&T finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots on a windy afternoon, and had 13 shots on net to the Cardinals' four.  Joseph made two saves in goal for the Miners, who will play their next three games at home.

The first of those contests will take place Friday when S&T hosts Southwest Baptist at 7:30 p.m.
