Women's soccer team to face Ichabods after Friday exhibition at Lindenwood

8/31/2022 11:00:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's soccer team will seek to break into the win column for the first time this weekend as it will take on Washburn in a non-conference clash Sunday in Topeka, Kan., two days after playing an exhibition contest against former Great Lakes Valley Conference member Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo.

The Miners will take on Lindenwood at 7 p.m. Friday before heading to Topeka to take on the Ichabods in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.  S&T and Washburn are playing for the second time since the schools were rivals in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2004, as they met in 2012 in a game from by the Miners.

After dropping their season opener to top-ranked Grand Valley State last Thursday, the Miners appeared headed for their first victory of the year Sunday when they jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead against Missouri Southern at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.  However, a pair of weather delays prevented the contest from reaching official game status as it was suspended after 10 minutes elapsed in the second half.

In the 55 minutes that were played Ava Hoenes (Columbia, MO/Hickman) scored twice and Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) added a goal for S&T, while Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) had blanked the Lions in goal.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Lindenwood has four games under its belt in its first season as a member of NCAA Division I and has posted a 1-2-1 record, earning a victory over Southern Illinois and a tie against Northern Illinois.  The Lions have scored just twice in those four games – getting goals from Mia Carrigan and Rachel Jackson – both of which came in the win over SIU.  Sam Blazek has played all 360 minutes in goal with a goals against average of 0.75

Washburn picked up a pair of wins in its opening weekend of action, nipping Oklahoma Baptist 1-0 before racking up a 7-3 victory at William Jewell on Sunday.  Viviana Soto-Herrera scored the lone goal in the win over OBU, then Belle Kennedy and Jaedyn Johnson scored two goals apiece in Sunday's win as the Ichabods scored five times in the second half. Reagan Wells has a 1.50 goal against average with six saves through two games.
