Miners blanked twice by Ichabods

TOPEKA, Kan. – Missouri S&T suffered a doubleheader sweep for the second day in succession on Saturday, as Washburn extended its winning streak to 14 games by blanking the Miners in both games of the twinbill by identical 8-0 scores.  S&T fell to 6-8 on the season with the two setbacks on Saturday.

Game 1: Washburn 8, Miners 0

Washburn (16-6) scored runs in each of the first three innings, including three in the third, to take an early lead and then completed the win by scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth.

The Ichabods got their first run on an RBI double by winning pitcher Jaycee Ginter in the opening inning, then Jenna Moore hit a solo home run off S&T starter Charyle Rowland in the second – the first home run allowed by S&T pitching this season – to give the Ichabods a 2-0 lead.

Washburn outhit the Miners 10-5 in the game – no Miner had more than one hit in the contest.

Game 2: Washburn 8, Miners 0

After three scoreless innings in the nightcap, Ginter broke the tie in the fourth when she belted a two-run homer off S&T starter Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) to give Washburn a lead it would not relinquish.

The Miners had runners in scoring position in each of the first six innings, including a runner at third in the third after a two-out triple by Shannon Flowers (Katy, Texas/Katy) and again in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames, but couldn't push a run across as they were blanked for the third time on the weekend trip to Topeka.

Besides the Ginter homer in the fourth, the Ichabods scored three times in the fifth and three times in the sixth to end the contest.

Washburn outhit the Miners 9-6 in the second game, with Emma Vaughn (Pevely, Mo./Herculaneum) getting two of S&T's six hits.  Three of S&T's six hits in the game went for extra bases.  Wooldridge recorded two strikeouts in her 5 1/3 innings in the circle.

Missouri S&T's next contest will take place on Wednesday when it takes on Lincoln in a doubleheader at Battle High School in Columbia.  The twinbill will get underway at 11 a.m.
