ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's swimming team closed out its competition schedule for the first semester by winning two of three dual meets in a quadrangular hosted by Missouri-St. Louis, as the Miners had two first place finishes and four second place showings individually over the course of Friday evening's meet.
The Miners won dual meets over Maryville by a count of 168-27 and Quincy by a score of 154-39, but lost to the host Tritons by a count of 138-66.
Missouri S&T's event wins on Friday came from
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden/), as he won both the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:54.75 and later took first in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.29. Second place finishes were recorded by
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 51.68 seconds as well as
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) in a time of 50.93 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Miners grabbed seconds in both of the relays that were contested, finishing there in the 200-yard medley relay behind the team of Clancy,
Jordan Christensen (Coralville, IA/Iowa West), Baxter and
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) in a time of 1:33.83 and in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the team of
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy),
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe),
Daniel Matlock (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) and
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) finished with a mark of 3:14.74.
Marcelo Busch (Sao Centrano Do Sui-Sp, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) took third in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:06.05, as did Walters in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.85 and 100-freestyle in 48.29 seconds and Clancy in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.75 seconds. Christensen and
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) finished in a tie for third in the 100-yard breaststroke as both reached the wall in 59.23 seconds.
Busch added a fourth place showing in the 500-freestyle as he finished in 4:59.81, while Wiedemeier placed fourth in the 200-freestyle in 1:46.65 along with Fergus in the 100-butterfly in 52.61 seconds.
Missouri S&T's next scheduled meet will take place Jan. 14 at Truman State.
