ROLLA, Mo. - The Missouri S&T women's basketball team opened its home schedule in a big way by routing Baptist Bible 88-48 Tuesday evening at Gibson Arena.
The visiting Patriots scored the first four points of the game, but after that, it was all Miners.
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) got S&T on the scoreboard with a three-point bucket to cut the deficit to one, then
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) netted a three-point shot at the 8:50 mark that put the Miners into the lead for good. By the time the period ended, S&T had outscored the Patriots 32-2 – thanks in part to Addyson Kent's nine points on three-of-four shooting from behind the arc to take a 32-6 advantage.
In the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Lady Patriots went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 22 on a free throw by Essiena Bennett. However,
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) responded with two straight baskets to increase the lead back to 26. Anna Finley led all S&T players with five points in the quarter. The Miners went into halftime with a commanding 55-22 advantage.
In the second half, the Miners continued to build on their advantage, taking its largest lead at the 7:22 mark in the fourth period, the Miners were able to reach their biggest lead of the game at 42 on a layup by
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy). Chorus Davis scored the last basket for S&T that secured the 88-48 victory.
Kent led all Miners in scoring with 18 points and grabbed five rebounds in just under 21 minutes. Kerr contributed 16 points and five rebounds with the only block in the game, while
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) added 12 points and Katelynne Roberts contributed 10 points and led all Miners with seven rebounds.
As a team, the Miners shot 45.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three-point range, stole the ball 13 times and scored 27 points on Lady Patriots turnovers.
A milestone achieved in this game:
At the 8:37 mark in the third quarter, on a layup made by Kerr and assisted by Katelynne Roberts, Kerr passed Hailee Parks for seventh all-time in Miner history in made field goals.
Opponents Stats:
Harley Maxwell led Baptist Bible with six rebounds and tied Essiena Bennett with nine points, while Abby Woolsey led all Lady Patriots with three assists. The Lady Patriots shot 29.1 percent and only netted four-of-17 attempts from behind the arc for the game.
The Miners return to the hardwood on Nov. 18 as S&T will travel to the two-day Central Oklahoma Classic in Edmond, Okla. S&T's first draw is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. against the host Bronchos in Hamilton Field House.
