KENOSHA, Wis. - The Missouri S&T women's basketball team opened its regular season play with a 77-52 defeat against Wisconsin-Parkside this Friday afternoon.
In the first quarter, Alex Kerr (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) started the scoring for the Miners on a short jump shot in the paint.
The Miners were able to stretch their lead to 10 on a Kerr free-throw at the 1:34 mark, as she led S&T with 10 points in the quarter. The Miners also shot five-of-six from the free throw to help take the 20-11 advantage.
In the second quarter, the Miners regained their 10-point lead on Addyson Kent's three-point basket, but the Rangers outscored S&T in that period 23-18 to get back into the game. The Miners shot 43 percent from the field in the first half and was eight-of-10 from the free throw line. S&T scored the final four points of the period to take a 38-34 advantage into the break.
In the second half, however, the Miners made just five of their 32 attempts from the field as the Rangers outscored S&T 43-14. Parkside took the lead for good with 4:07 to go in the third quarter when Alyssa Nelson hit a pair of free throws.
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) led the charge for S&T with her 21st career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. At the 11:21 mark in the third quarter, Kerr passed Leah Kessenich for fourth place on the all-time rebounding list.
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) added eight points with one rebound. Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) contributed six points with four rebounds and two assists. As a team, the Miners shot 29.7 percent from the field and connected just three times on 20 tries from three-point land.
Courtney Schoenbeck led the Rangers with 15 points, while Grace Lomen had 10 rebounds while Paty Gallasova led all players with eight assists.
The Miners return to the hardwood tomorrow for the second game of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Classic, facing the Cavaliers of Walsh University at 12 p.m. in Alfred & Bernice De Simone Arena.
