Miners' Niboh selected as GLVC's special teams player of week

10/3/2022 11:33:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T running back Gideon Niboh (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell), who accumulated 172 yards in kick returns in the Miners' win Saturday over Quincy, has been selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week by the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Niboh, who earned the GLVC's special teams award for the second time in his career, returned three kickoffs in the 31-24 win for 137 yards – averaging 45.3 yards per runback – and added a 35-yard punt return in the contest.  He had kickoff returns of 70 and 47 yards in the game that set the Miners up in Quincy territory and led to scores in both cases.

His 70-yard return came on the kickoff after Quincy's first touchdown that put S&T at the Hawks' 20-yard line, leading to a Parker Boyce (Hartsburg, MO/Southern Boone) field goal that got the Miners on the scoreboard.  Niboh later returned the opening kickoff of the second half 47 yards to the Quincy 43-yard line, then the Miners completed that drive with a touchdown run by Cameren Smith (Claymont, DE/Concord) to tie the game.

Niboh is the third Miner to earn the GLVC's weekly honor this season and second to do so on special teams, as Jamie Gott (Marion, IL/Marion) was named following the Miners' win at Drake on Sept. 10.  Ben Straatmann (Washington, MO/Washington) was also selected as the league's player of the week on defense after the Drake contest.

Missouri S&T will return to play Saturday when it takes on Truman State in Kirksville, Mo., at 2 p.m.
