ROLLA, Mo. – With only three games left in the regular season, Missouri S&T's volleyball team will look to lock up a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament when it heads on the road for a pair of contests over the weekend.
The Miners' weekend road trip will take them to Indianapolis on Friday to take on the Greyhounds in a 6 p.m. (Eastern time) match before playing their final road game of the season on Saturday against 25
th-ranked Lewis in Romeoville, Ill., at 3 p.m.
Missouri S&T enters play this week needing just one win – or losses by Southwest Baptist, Illinois Springfield and McKendree – to clinch a berth to the GLVC Tournament as the Miners sit at 6-3 in conference play and 14-7 overall. The S&T opponents are in a similar situation, as Lewis also needs a win or a loss by the other three teams to lock up its playoff spot and UIndy is sitting one game behind the Miners heading into Friday's contest.
The Miners extended their winning streak to three games last week with a pair of conference wins, knocking off Maryville in straight sets and holding off McKendree in a five-set battle on Saturday. S&T got 18 kills from
Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) in Saturday's win as she now ranks second on the team in kills to
Madelyn Mason (Mount Horeb, WI/Mount Horeb) with 242 on the year.
Mason has 244 kills for the season and ranks ninth in points per set with 3.67 on the season.
Abigail Widiker (Hammond, WI/Saint Croix Central) also cleared the 200 mark in kills on the year with 11 on Saturday as she had 205 for the season.
Shelby Ply (Rolla, MO/Rolla), meanwhile, had a hand in 17 blocks in the two matches last week to earn the Molten GLVC Defensive Player of the Week award. Ply currently ranks second in the GLVC in blocks with 1.18 per set (91 for the season) and is also second in hitting percentage in the conference with a mark of .351.
The Miners have one additional player among the conference leaders in
Madison Offerman (Herscher, IL/Herscher), who is fourth in blocks with 1.16 per set as she had 86 in 74 sets played. The Miners as a team lead the GLVC in blocks with 2.56 per set, an average that also ranks fifth in NCAA Division II.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Indianapolis comes into the weekend at 12-11 overall and 5-4 in the GLVC after beating Southwest Baptist in four sets on Friday to snap a four-game losing streak before falling in straight sets at Drury on Saturday. The Greyhounds posted a .251 hitting mark in the win over SBU, but Drury hit .263 against them the following day.
Grace Hegwood leads the Greyhounds with 239 kills on the season and is also second on the team in digs with 204, trailing only Makenna Barnhart's total of 397 that ranks fourth in the conference. Hannah Sabotin is eighth in the conference in hitting percentage at .303, while Emma Morris ranks 10
th in assists with 300 on the year.
Lewis is tied with the Miners in the GLVC standings at 6-3 and owns a 17-7 overall record; the Flyers fell two spots in the American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings to 25
th after a split over the weekend that included a 3-0 loss to Rockhurst. The loss ended a five-game winning streak for Lewis, who rebounded Saturday with a four-set win at Southwest Baptist.
Bella Ray has been one of the top front line players in the GLVC this season, as she leads the league in blocks per set with 1.29 (total of 108) and has also recorded a team-high 269 kills. Lauren Stenman has dished out 9.84 assists per set, while Farah Taki has 83 blocks as well.
