SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – In its final competition prior to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, Missouri S&T's swimming team dropped a dual meet Friday to third-ranked Drury 193-69. The Panthers captured 12 of the 14 contested events Friday.
S&T's wins came from
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:46.40 with a victory margin of just over a second and
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) in the 200-yard breaststroke, as he edged Drury's Ben Gabbey by 0.11 seconds in a time of 2:07.73. Melinder also had a second place showing in the 500-freestyle with a time of 4:45.51.
Third place showings were recorded by
Marcelo Busch (Sao Centrano Do Sui-Sp, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) in the 1,000-freestyle in 9:59.89 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.87,
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) in the 100-yard backstroke in 51.26 seconds,
Joshua Umrysh (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) in the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.55 seconds,
Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin) in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.91 seconds and
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.08.
S&T's 200-yard medley relay team of Clancy, Umrysh,
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) and
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy) also finished third in 1:31.84, as did the 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Gabe Asevedo,
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe), Davis and
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) as it finished in 1:25.08.
The GLVC Swimming & Diving Championships begin Feb. 9 in Elkhart, Ind.
