ROLLA, Mo. – The early season five-game winning streak put together by Missouri S&T's men's soccer team came to a halt Sunday afternoon as Rockhurst handed the Miners a 4-0 loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners, who were seeking to start with five straight wins in conference play for the first time ever, fell to 5-2 overall as they lost for the first time since their season opener and to 4-1 in the GLVC.
Rockhurst (4-4, 3-1 GLVC) got on the scoreboard in the 13
th minute as Elluan Martins Gomes took an inbounds pass, made a move by a Miner defender near the end line and scored on a bad angle goal as he got the ball between S&T goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) and the near post.
S&T had a chance to tie the contest in the 32
nd minute, but
Jason Jorgensen's (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) redirection attempt in front of the net went just over the crossbar. Rockhurst proceeded to add to its lead five minutes later on a goal by Cristofaro LiCavoli and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Miners, who outshot Rockhurst 15-10 for the game and 11-3 in the second half, came out with some pressure to begin the second half and created a couple of scoring chances, but was unable to get one past Hawk goalkeeper Fabio D'Errico. The Hawks then scored twice in a span of just over three minutes to extend their lead to the final margin.
Joseph made four saves in goal for the Miners, who will head to the road for their next three contests beginning next Sunday in Springfield, Mo., against Drury.
