ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team extended its winning streak to five games and remained undefeated in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday evening as it posted a 3-0 victory over Southwest Baptist at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The win, which improved the Miners to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in the GLVC, gave S&T its first run of five consecutive wins since the 2011 campaign and sets up a showdown Sunday against perennial power Rockhurst at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
Friday's win didn't come easily, as
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) got a penalty kick opportunity in the 12
th minute of play but hit it off the crossbar, then goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) had to make a tough save on a shot by Pierre Lurot in the 24
th minute. S&T then broke on top in the in the 28
th minute of action as
Mitch Mueller (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) – who had just entered the game – got a pass from
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) and drilled a shot by SBU goalkeeper Will vanHoornbeek.
The score remained 1-0 at the intermission, even though the Miners outshot the Bearcats (0-5, 0-3 GLVC) 11-2 over the first 45 minutes of play.
Shortly after Joseph turned away another scoring chance by Lurot, S&T got a second penalty kick opportunity in the 62
nd minute and freshman
Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) converted it for his first collegiate goal to double the Miner advantage. The Miners scored again in the 89
th minute as Semlitsch atoned for his missed penalty kick earlier in the night by scoring off an assist from
Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central).
The Miners outshot the Bearcats 21-6 for the game as Joseph recorded his second shutout in as many starts, making three saves along the way.
