Miners fall in opener to 22nd-ranked Mustangs

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team opened its season Thursday afternoon by dropping a 3-0 decision to 22nd-ranked Midwestern State in a game played at Rogers State University.

The Mustangs, who were also opening their season Thursday, scored twice in the first 20 minutes of play and added a goal in the 77th minute to ice the victory.  The first goal came in the 13th minute when Trevor Amann hit a shot from outside the box into the lower left corner of the net, then Amann struck again less than seven minutes later off a feed from James Doyle into the same part of the net.

Carlos Flores scored the third Midwestern State goal in the 77th minute of action.

Midwestern State held a 10-1 advantage in shots in the first half and finished the contest by outshooting S&T 19-4.  The Miners had two shots on goal, one by Nicholas Sikora (Highland, IL/Highland) and the other by Afxentis Andreou (Paphos, Cyprus/Lykeo Agios Charalambous).

Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) played all 90 minutes in goal for S&T and was credited with four saves.

The Miners have another nationally ranked team on deck, as they will head to Tahlequah, Okla., Saturday to face 19th-ranked Northeastern State in a 1 p.m. contest.
