TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team bounced back from loss on opening day by making a second half goal by
Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) stand up in a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon over 19
th-ranked Northeastern State.
Harper scored an unassisted goal just over five minutes into the second half to give the Miners the lead, putting a shot from about six yards away into the lower left corner past NSU goalkeeper Niklas Kirhoff. From there, the Miner defense and goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) took care of the rest to secure S&T's first victory of the 2021 season.
Joseph turned away all seven RiverHawk shots on goal in the game, including five in the second half. That included a stop on a shot by Luan Lamas in the final minute of play.
Northeastern State (1-1), who recorded a 1-0 win over Drury on Thursday, outshot the Miners by a 16-8 margin in the game and had seven shots on net to the Miners' five.
Grant Polman (Wentzville, MO/Holt) had three of S&T's shots and Harper had two in the game.
Saturday's victory was the Miners' first over a ranked team since they beat eighth-ranked Rockhurst in overtime in the opening round of the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Missouri S&T opens its GLVC slate next Sunday when it heads to the road to take on Quincy in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
