Miners Play to Scoreless Draw With Bulldogs in Home Opener

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team continued Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday afternoon at the Missouri S&T Soccer Field, welcoming Truman State in the first home contest of the year. The Miners (2-2-1, 1-1-1) and Bulldogs (2-2-1, 1-1-1) played a tightly contested game that went the full distance with two overtime periods, but not even 110 minutes was enough to determine a winner as the sides played to a scoreless draw.

S&T had a pair of early chances to get on the board, both coming from Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) in succession in the 10th and 11th minutes, but the Miners were denied both times. The Bulldogs managed a flurry of shots in the minutes that followed, but like the Miners, were unable to find the net as Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South) made a pair of saves.

The Miners had a few more chances to get on the board in the closing minutes of the first half, with Gratz and Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) combining for four more shot attempts but none found home as the two teams went into the intermission scoreless.

The second half followed the same course as the first, as neither team could find the net, despite several good opportunities. Truman State had a plethora of chances but again Steins held firm in goal, making two more saves to keep things even. The Miners had a chance to win things in the final minute of regulation, but Ashley Haag's (Keller, TX/Keller Central) shot was saved by the keeper to close regulation with no score.

The Bulldogs got the first shot off just over a minute into the first extra period but it sailed wide left before Gratz missed on a pair of close tries in succession in the 94th minute. Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) looked to try and end things in the 97th minute, but she too misfired as her shot sailed right and the first extra period concluded with no score.

The roles reversed in the final 10 minutes of action, with Truman State managing three shot attempts, all of which were saved by Steins. Gratz provided S&T's only shot of the final overtime period but it sailed wide left in the 101st minute. The game came to a close after 110 minutes of hard-fought soccer with the scoreboard reading the same as it did at kickoff at 0-0.

The Bulldogs held a 19-12 edge in shots during the day, with 10 coming in the second half, while S&T held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks. Steins finished the day with four saves in goal. Gratz accounted for nine of the Miners' shots in the game with Haag, Chung and Hopkins making up the balance.

Up next for S&T, they continue their homestand Friday, welcoming Southwest Baptist to the Missouri S&T Soccer Field, with kickoff set for 5 P.M.
