ROLLA, Mo. – Lightning struck again for Missouri S&T's men's soccer team Sunday afternoon, as the Miners got a goal from
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) with only 28 seconds left in the second overtime period to give them a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over Truman State at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners (4-1, 3-0 GLVC) won their fourth straight game in the process and third straight conference contest with a goal in the waning moments as they opened a GLVC season at 3-0 for the first time since becoming a member of the conference. S&T's four straight wins are the most in succession since early in the 2017 season.
Moments after the Bulldogs (0-5, 0-3 GLVC) had a free kick opportunity outside the box with just under a minute to play in the second overtime, the Miner turned away that chance and created a transition opportunity out of it. Denis got the ball on the left wing, juked a defender and ripped a shot from about 15 yards away into the upper right corner of the net to end the hard-fought contest.
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) recorded his first shutout in goal for the Miners by making five saves in his 109-plus minutes of action. Truman outshot the Miners 15-14 in the game, but the Miners had five corner kick chances to one for the Bulldogs.
Missouri S&T, who was playing its home opener Sunday afternoon, will remain at home next weekend for a pair of matches starting with Friday's 7:30 p.m. matchup with Southwest Baptist.
