LIBERTY, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team was back in action Friday evening at Greene Stadium as they matched up against William Jewell in the second Great Lakes Valley Conference match of the season for both teams. The Miners (2-2-0, 1-1-0) scored a quartet of goals in the first half and never looked back, scoring once more in the second half and dispatching the Cardinals (0-4-1, 0-2-0) by a score of 5-0.
The scoring for S&T started early, with
Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) finding the net in the eighth minute of play on a cross from
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) that caught the Cardinals' keeper out of position for the easy first goal of the evening.
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) scored her team-leading third goal of the year in the 19th minute, scoring on a chip shot over the outstretched arms of the keeper on a ball from
Andersyn Foster (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) to make it 2-0 Miners.
The first half scoring continued in the 29th minute, as
Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) scored her first goal of the season, firing a strike from nearly 30 yards away on a ball from Gratz to make it 3-0.
Paige Jackson (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) joined the fun in the 37th minute, scoring her first goal of the season on a second-chance goal following a deflection off William Jewell's keeper after a try from
Paige VanDaele (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) was saved, as S&T extended their lead to 4-0, which would hold going into halftime.
The scoring wasn't over after the intermission, as Gratz scored her second of the game on a wide-open goal on a ball from Chung, who drove in close the net and drew a defender and the goalie to her before dishing out the assist on the fifth Miner goal of the evening.
Despite getting off several more shot attempts, the Miners could not find the net again in the second half as the evening concluded with a 5-0 win.
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South) started the evening in goal and made a pair of saves against seven shots from William Jewell before turning things over to
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) in the second half.
For the match, the Miners outshot the Cardinals 22-8 with 10 shots on goal, and each goal scored by the Green & Gold had an assist attached to it. 24 players saw action for Missouri S&T in the night, with several making their Miner debut, including
Kana Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central),
Rebecca Grady (Cypress, TX/Bridgeland) and
Lily Abraham (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge).
Friday's win marked S&T's first four-goal performance in a half since September 25, 2008 against Saint Joseph's, a game the Miners went on to win 6-1. The five-goal effort for the game from Missouri S&T was the first time since 2011 in overtime against Kentucky Wesleyan, and the first five-goal game in regulation time since 2008 against Maryville.
Up next, the Miners return home to host Truman State at the Missouri S&T Soccer Field, with kickoff scheduled for 12 P.M.
