ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team found some more late magic Friday night to win for the third straight time on the road, as
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) scored in the 88
th minute to give the Miners a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over William Jewell.
Jorgensen – the Miners' leading scorer a year ago – got his first goal of the season when he swooped in and headed in a corner kick to break the tie and give S&T (3-1) a 2-0 start to its conference slate for only the second time since becoming a member of the GLVC in 2005.
S&T took the initial lead in the game when
Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) headed in a throw-in that trickled past Jewell goalkeeper Eli Gratz in the ninth minute of action, which was also the first goal scored by the Miners in the first half this season.
The Miners outshot the Cardinals (1-3, 1-1 GLVC) 11-5 in the first half, but Barbosa's goal was the only one S&T would get in the opening 45 minutes.
The lead stood until the 70
th minute when the Cardinals got a free kick opportunity outside of the box. The initial shot was blocked by the defense, but the next shot taken hit the goal post and wound up at the feet of Kektso Lipholo, who knocked the loose ball into the net to even the score.
S&T had its share of chances to regain the lead after the score was knotted up, as
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas), Barbosa and Jorgensen all had attempts stopped by Gratz and
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) hit an open shot from the top of the box just over the crossbar. But given the corner kick chance with under three minutes to go, Jorgensen got his head on
Josh Wobbe's (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) feed and redirected it into the net for the game-winner.
The Miners had a 21-10 advantage in shots in the game and had five corner kick chances in the contest. Goalkeeper
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) finished with three saves in goal for S&T, who will open its home schedule Sunday against Truman State at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
