Missouri S&T's football team will look for its second straight victory at Allgood-Bailey Stadium Saturday afternoon as it hosts Wayne State (Mich.) of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Saturday's game will be S&T Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, with all faculty and staff members -- along with their immediate families -- being admitted free to the 1 p.m. contest.
The Miners rebounded from their opening night loss at South Dakota School of Mines by routing Arkansas Baptist 71-0 last Saturday, as S&T racked up 627 yards of total offense and seven different Miners scored touchdowns as it posted its highest-ever point total in their home facility.
Most of the big numbers in the contest came from players that saw more game action, led by running backs
Josh Sanders (Maize, KS/Maize) and
Gideon Niboh (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell). Sanders ran for 186 yards and scored three touchdowns last week, while Niboh had a 69-yard touchdown run included in the 128 yards he ran for. Quarterbacks
Max Conard (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South) and
Luke Hertzler (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) combined to 22-of-32 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns.
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) has rushed for 145 yards on the year, while wideout
Breon Michel (Colorado Springs, CO/Vista Ridge) has 10 catches for 177 yards and four touchdowns as the top target for
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte), who threw for 317 yards and three scores on opening night.
Ben Straatmann (Washington, MO/Washington) leads the Miner defense with 14 tackles and two for a loss to lead the defensive effort, while
Justin Onwugbufor (Wichita, KS/Northwest) has 11 stops on the season. The Miner defense had five quarterback sacks last week and also got interceptions from
Cameron Clemons (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran North),
Carson Prenger (Jefferson City, MO/Blair Oaks) and
Peyton Shelton (Ventura, CA/Buena).
On special teams,
Zach Glaess (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek) has been successful on all but one of his 13 extra point tries and on four of five field goal attempts, including three of at least 49 yards. Last week, he made the second-longest field goal in program history by connecting on a 52-yarder.
ABOUT WAYNE STATE: The Warriors will bring an 0-2 record into their first road game of the season on Saturday, as they have dropped contests in the first two weeks to fifth-ranked Slippery Rock and to Truman State; Truman beat the Warriors 27-9 last Saturday in Detroit. Wayne State outgained the Bulldogs 302-264 in the game, but allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown and two other scores when Truman started possessions in Wayne State territory.
Wayne State's opener against Slippery Rock saw it rush for 247 yards but throw for just 56, but the Warriors had much more success throwing the ball against Truman as redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Kulka completed 27-of-40 throws for 219 yards. However, the Warriors had only 83 net yards on the ground in the game, with Kulka's 36 yards leading the way.
Avery Hall leads the Warriors with 117 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the season, while Kendall Williams has a team-high 11 receptions for 68 yards. Trevonte Davis has 10 catches on the year as the receiving duo ranks third and fourth in the GLIAC in that department.
Opposing teams have averaged 333.5 yards per game against Wayne State this season, as linebackers Brandon Tuck-Hayden and Julius Wilkerson share the team lead with 17 tackles apiece. Tieler Houston and Samari Dean each have an interception, while the Warriors have also blocked two kicks in the first two contests of the year.
Today's game is the first-ever meeting between S&T and Wayne State.
