Miners Offense Falls Short to Prairie Stars in Final Games of Season

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. – The Miners wrapped up their 2021 season on the road today, falling 4-0 and 12-4 to the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, S&T did not score any runs, but not for lack of trying. The Miners recorded seven hits in the game and advanced four of them into scoring position. But, UIS's defense held steady while their offense recorded two runs in each of the 3rd and 5th innings to take the 4-0 win.

Maddy Passolano (Mokena, Ill./Lockport Township) and Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) had a multi-hit game while Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield), Chloe Saltijeral (/North Aurora, Ill.), and Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) all picked up hits.

Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) got the start in the pitcher's circle for game one going 4.2 innings with two strikeouts recorded while Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) finished out the remaining 1.1 innings of work with two strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, the Prairie Stars used an 8-run first inning to gain and early lead.

S&T would get one of those runs back in the top of the 2nd inning when Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) hit a sacrifice fly into center field and allowed Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) to tag up from third base and cut the Miners deficit to 8-1. UIS would extend their lead out to 11-1 by the bottom of the 4th inning before S&T came storming back.

After a Prairie Star error led to McCalla scoring, Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) hit a ball into right field that would allow Maddy Passolano (Mokena, Ill./Lockport Township) score and make it an 11-3 game. The very next batter, Rachel Smith (Monroe City, Mo./Monroe City R-1), would hit a short roller to second base and send Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) across the plate to cut UIS's lead to 11-4.

The Prairie Stars would get one more run in the bottom of the 6th inning to take the 12-4 win.

The Miners put up 10 hits in the second game of the day with Passolano, Wooldridge, and McCalla all recording two hits while Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville), Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton), Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield), and Keely Morgan (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) all recorded one hit each.

Bryn Wooldridge (Salisbury, Mo./Salisbury) got the start in game two going 3.2 innings with one strikeout recorded while Charlye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark./Lake Hamilton) finished out the 1.2 innings of work with two strikeouts.
