Miners score twice late to stun Flyers

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team scored twice in the final 5:10 of play Friday evening to overcome a deficit and stun Lewis 3-2 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

Josh Wobbe (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) and Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) scored goals in that final stretch to allow the Miners to overcome the one-goal deficit and improve to 4-7-1 on the season (13 points), while dropping Lewis to 6-5-1 (19 points) and handing it a critical loss in the Flyers' quest for a spot in the GLVC Tournament.

Lewis scored the first goal in the match just 13:34 into play when Domenic Baumann scored off an assist from Seth Dilworth.  But before halftime, the Miners drew even at the 30:28 mark when Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) got a pass from Denis from the end line, as he sent it across the crease for Jorgensen to knock it in on the opposite side of the net.

The Flyers regained the advantage only 1:50 into the second half on a goal by Jimmy Mwanga and held onto that lead until 5:10 remained in the game.  Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) took the ball down the right side of the field and sent a pass through the defense to Wobbe, who slipped in behind the defense and one-timed a shot by Lewis goalkeeper Will Maurice.

Just 1:21 seconds later, the Miners got the game-winner when Sean Perryman (Springfield, MO/Glendale) sent a free kick from in front of the S&T bench into the middle of the box, where Denis got to it and headed it in to give S&T its first lead of the game.

The Flyers outshot the Miners 12-9 in the contest, but S&T had five shots on goal to four for the Flyers.  Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) was credited with two saves in net for the Miners, who will play their final road game of the season Sunday when they take on Illinois Springfield.
