SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team didn't need as much in terms of dramatics Sunday as it did on Friday in its win at Lewis, but did get a second half goal from
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) that proved to be decisive as the Miners completed a sweep of its weekend road swing in Illinois with a 1-0 victory over Illinois Springfield.
The win gave the Miners a two-game weekend sweep for the first time since October 2016, when S&T picked up wins at McKendree and UIS. That win over UIS in 2016 was the first of four one-goals wins by the Miners over Prairie Stars in the last five meetings between the teams.
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) sent a pass from beyond midfield to Rossell, who got behind the defense about 10 yards outside the box and got a shot away from about 15 yards away past UIS goalkeeper Pijus Petkevicius for the only goal of the contest in the 64th minute of play.
The Prairie Stars (3-3-3, 12 points) had a chance to tie the game a short time later but Jay Younger's head ball attempt caromed off the crossbar. UIS had no other shots on goal for the remainder of the contest even though it outshot the Miners (5-7-1, 16 points) 14-8 in the game.
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) made four saves in goal for the Miners, who will wrap up their 2021 spring regular season schedule Friday when they host Quincy at 7:30 p.m.
