ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T wrapped up its 2021 spring schedule Friday as it came up on the short end of a 2-1 decision to Quincy at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Jack Rhead got loose on a breakaway in the 80
th minute to score the go-ahead goal for the Hawks (9-4-1), just under 10 minutes after the Miners (5-8-1) had drawn even in the contest.
Following a scoreless first half where the Hawks outshot S&T 8-3, Quincy scored the first goal of the contest in the 53
rd minute when Cole Hayes got the ball on an errant pass, then after eluding the Miner defense in front of the net, hit a shot past a diving
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) into the lower left corner.
The Miners drew even in the 70
th minute when
Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) sent a through ball to
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas), who proceeded to beat Quincy goalkeeper Michele Barletta in a one-on-one situation.
The Hawks nearly regained the lead nearly two minutes after the Rossell goal when Nick Chapman hit a shot that caromed off the crossbar and Aubrey Reis' rebound shot went wide. About seven minutes later, Reis sent a pass from the Hawks' side of midfield ahead to Rhead that led to the tie-breaking tally.
S&T, who was outshot 16-10 overall and 5-3 in shots on net, had three shots in the final 10 minutes.
In the Miners' 5-8-1 campaign, only one of their 14 games was decided by more than one goal.
