ROLLA, MO- The Miner volleyball team (12-6, 12-6 GLVC) who clinched the GLVC West Division last week with a win over Drury, snagged the 5-seed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and will face off against the 4
th seeded Quincy Hawks this Friday night.
S&T, who recorded three top-25 wins this season, capped out their regular season winning four of their last five matches. Leading the charge for the Miners, the dynamic duo of
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) and combined for over 400 kills this season and are both ranked in the top-10 in the GLVC in kills/set, points/set, and total kills. Gannaway is also currently leading the country in service aces with 38.
Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) has been the go-to for S&T this season in the setter's spot; Merjil, who has 560 assists in 18 matches, is ranked 6
th in the league in total assists and is 7
th in the GLVC in assists/set.
On the defensive side,
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and
Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) have held down their opponents at the net to just .155 hitting while sending a combined 128 blocks back this season. They are both ranked in the top-20 in the GLVC in blocks/set and total blocks while O'Boyle is ranked 1
st in the conference and 2
nd in the nation with 79 total blocks.
Earlier this season when the Miners faced off against then 23
rd ranked Quincy, S&T took down the Hawks in a 3-1 match that saw the Miner's front line record 13 blocks and double-digit kills from
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High),
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve),
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State), and
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy).
After dropping the first set, the Miners came back swinging. They held Quincy to just .152 hitting in the second set and took the 25-17 win, then held them to a negative hitting percentage and just five kills in the third set to cruise to a 25-12 set three win.
With the Miners leading 24-17 in the fourth set, Quincy held off five straight match-points against the Miners to make it a 24-22 game. But,
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) would give the Miners the 25-22 set win and give S&T their third top-25 win of the season.
Friday's match will take place at the Eastside Center in East Peoria, Ill. at 5:30pm.
