ROLLA, MO- Closing out their eight home GLVC contest slate, the Miners faced off against the Saints of Maryville University this afternoon. While S&T was able to produce offense in the final innings of each game, it would not be enough to top Maryville and the Miners faced the 10-1 and 8-2 losses.
The Saints took an early lead in the first game, getting six runs in the opening frame.
S&T would not see a run score until the bottom of the 5
th inning; with
Maddy Passolano (Mokena, Ill./Lockport Township) on first base and
Elizabeth Viox (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) on third, they both took off for the double steal attempt. While Viox would help cut the Miners deficit to 10-1, it was too late to make a comeback.
Along with Viox and Passolano,
Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) and Keeley Morgan recorded hits in the Miners first game of the day.
The Miners kept it close in the second game of the doubleheader. The Saints, who got a 2-run homerun from Alyssa Callans in the top of the 3
rd inning, would be held to just those two runs for the majority of the game.
But, Maryville's offense would come to life in the 6
th and 7
th innings and they would extend their lead out to 8-0 heading into the bottom of the 7
th inning.
S&T would get their two runs off a sac bunt from
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) that would allow
Maddy Passolano (Mokena, Ill./Lockport Township) to score. A throwing error from the Saints would send the ball into the Miners dugout and then bring
Hannah Antzoulatos (Planfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) across the plate to cut their deficit to 8-2. But, those would be the only two runs S&T would get and suffer the 8-2 loss.
